Recently I sent an e-mail to a friend & business prospect asking for permission for Phyllis & me to visit his office to tell him about our social media outsourcing services.
Well, I never expected to get this response.
“We were talking a few weeks ago about social media strategy & trying to figure out the best way to utilize social media for our industry. One of my business associates suggested talking with you about your new company.
I’m still not sure what the right strategy/answer is & it’s something your firm could likely help us with, but to be candid, there is an...

A few weeks ago I did a post, titled, “You Really Don’t Want To Do This on LinkedIn.”
I told how I’d I received a request from Bob, who I didn’t know very well, to make a business introduction to one of my LinkedIn connections. However, I had never done business with Bob, so there was no way I could comfortably recommend his work.
I felt my only option was to forward the request with these comments, “I’ve met Bob on a couple of occasions. He seems very nice, but I really don’t know him very well. He asked me to forward this note to you.”
I was not surprised when the...

I’ll never forget the first time I laid eyes on Phyllis Neill, my business partner. It was August 5, 2009 at 7:59am at Starbucks in Vestavia. She was sitting patiently at the table near the front window working on her Blackberry.
She sent me a message through Twitter saying she was following me. Since we were both interested in social media, I followed her back. Then I went to LinkedIn to learn more. I saw she was a high level marketing person who held top positions in major research and technology firms and lived in Birmingham. So I asked her into my LinkedIn network. She accepted...

I often hear stories about people who make connections that were not possible before social media.
Take my friend, Ruwena Healy, who lives here in Birmingham. What are the chances of her having national connections?
I trained Ruwena who is President of Marketing 24/7 on LinkedIn a couple of years ago. She got off to a slow start so I had to bribe her to complete her profile.
She asked me to support her nomination for a business award which I told her I would do if she improved her LinkedIn profile.
Ruwena not only upgraded her profile, but she figured out how to...

Since this happens regularly to me on LinkedIn, I thought it might be insightful.
I was watching TV when an e-mail showed up on my Blackberry through LinkedIn. It said, “David…I’m using your suggestion regarding meeting selective professionals through LinkedIn. I thought I would give it a shot. I appreciate any good words you could pass along to John.”
Bob wanted me to forward his note & make an introduction to one of my connections on LinkedIn. I currently have over 1,200 connections. Some of those connections I know very well, many not as well,...

I recently had a conversation with my business partner, Phyllis Neill. I told her I really wanted to get more feedback or comments on my blog. I had visited Ike Pigott’s blog & he had received more comments on his most recent post than I had gotten in the past two years combined. Pretty depressing for me. Phyllis told me in order to get a greater response, I needed to be more provocative.
Well, my subject matter just doesn’t lead to anything that controversial. This blog is all about doing the little things in life everyday that make you successful. ...

I’ve taught hundreds of people how to use LinkedIn & I’m amazed how few of them make an effort to take advantage of one the most powerful business tools ever invented.
Now I admit LinkedIn is no fun. LinkedIn is work. But who said everything you do in business has to be fun?
If your competitors uses LinkedIn & you don’t, then you’re going to get left behind.
And people are beginning to wake up. LinkedIn has grown to 85 million members; one million new member every nine days; one new member every second.
And look at the demographic on LinkedIn:...

I will gag if I see another media story about protecting your privacy on Social Media. The media is always screaming, “Be careful of your connections on the Internet.”
About a hundred people a day get killed in automobile accidents in the U.S. However, I don’t hear the media suggesting you shouldn’t travel by car.
Here’s an e-mail I received from a Facebook friend who before hooking up on Facebook I had never met. “We’ve recently been asked to handle social media training/coaching for a few clients & we are so busy with our brand marketing and...

I will create some disagreement on this post, but I feel strongly about it and since this is my space, I get to have an opinion.
Whoever came up with the idea of being able to post your social media updates onto one site and then have it populate on all of them at once basically screwed up. Okay, it’s not the aggregator’s fault; it’s the user.
Let’s talk about Facebook, LinkedIn, & Twitter. It’s true all three have an area to post updates. However, Facebook is a social site; LinkedIn is a business site; & Twitter is totally different from...

Okay, so there’s no one right way to do social media. What works for one person or business won’t work for another. That’s why it’s so important to have a goal & then match your strategy against that goal.
However, there are a lot of “experts” who tell you exactly how social media should be done & criticize you if you don’t do it their way.
Take the decision as to whether you should know everyone in your LinkedIn network. LinkedIn recommends you have a relationship with your connections. However, I attended a break out session at the National...
