I got this e-mail from a business friend & at first I was taken back. He said, “That 164 million number you sited is HUGE. However, I Googled Windows Live Profile ‘David Sher’, & couldn’t find you. What’s up with that?”
Well, I just didn’t know how to respond.
To give some background, I recently published an article in the Birmingham Business Journal titled, “The Ten Things Businesses Need to Know about Social Media.”
For item number two, I stated, “Social Media is not just Facebook & Twitter. LinkedIn has over 75 million...

I walked into the room, looked around, & there was my two year old grandson playing with a toy steam engine in the corner of the den. He looked up, saw me, a huge smile spread across his face, & he yelled at the top of his lungs…”D is here, Mama, D is here!” Then he leaped to his feet, ran across the room, & hugged my legs. I think he was really glad to see me.
Well, there you have it. Everything you need to know about networking from a two year old.
It seems like many people in life & on the Internet are only focused on themselves. ...

I give a lot of speeches about social media and how it helps people build relationships. I gave a social media talk a couple of weeks ago emphasizing how many people are in my LinkedIn network, my number of Facebook friends, how many followers I have on Twitter and so forth….emphasizing that social media has given me the opportunity meet a lot of new people.
A couple of days after that presentation I received an e-mail from one of the participants. She said she’s on the board of a nonprofit organization and “since I have everyone in Birmingham on my...

I usually have a strong opinion about the proper etiquette on LinkedIn, but I’m stumped on this one.
I feel I’m generally right, but feel badly about my choice.
I received an invitation request from someone in my LinkedIn network. His note said, “Would you mind passing this along to Mr. Doe? I would really appreciate it.” He included a sales pitch for himself & his service.
However I had only met the sender once at a meeting & really didn’t know him. After that meeting, he sent me an invitation to join his LinkedIn network & I accepted. ...

I’ve lived in Birmingham all of my adult life and I promised I would never leave because I would give up the biggest competitive advantage I have in life & business. I know a lot of people. And as you’ve heard me say, “It’s whoo you know.” If I were to move some place else, I would have to start all over again…something that seems inconceivable.
Then I received an e-mail through LinkedIn from Warren Smedley a good business friend of mine. He said, “We have a new PhD researcher in the Cancer Center at UAB and when I met her husband, Gene Wahnefried,...

I completed my speech on social media when a young woman came up, handed me her business card & introduced herself. She said she really enjoyed my speech & hoped we could discuss further. I thanked her for her comments & proceeded to talk to others who had come to shake my hand.
A few days later, I received an invitation to join her network on LinkedIn & then an invitation to be her friend on Facebook. I was not surprised, considering her young age, that she was active on Facebook, but I was startled that we had 19 friends in common. I...

I opened my LinkedIn invitation & it included a note that said, “Hi David, I’m sitting here next to George Whitson & he tells me you trained him on social media & LinkedIn. Would you join my LinkedIn network?”
I accepted his invitation & immediate received a note back from him saying, “I’m the sales manager at my company & I’m looking to hire someone to help us with social media. Would you please give me a call?
Wow! That felt really good, so naturally I did as directed & called him first thing the next morning.
He answered...

I recently received an e-mail from Lynn Rathmell who works for Jewish Family Services. One of her duties is to help unemployed people find work. She asked me to meet with a seasoned business executive who lost his high level management position when his business was sold.
Lynn felt if I tutored him on social media & LinkedIn, I could help him find a job.
When I met him, his first comment was, “In the past I haven’t done a very good job of networking. I ran a successful distribution business for many years & didn’t feel networking was important. Now...

Whenever I present to a group, I ask, “If you were to meet a person you didn’t know, how would you check her out?” The response is always the same, “I would Google them.”
It’s said, you only have one chance to make a first impression. The first information anyone sees about you are the first few entries on Google.
This really got my attention when I was training a successful CEO on social media. He said, “I’m kind of a private person & I really don’t want everyone to know my business.” However, when I Googled his name & company,...

I had just finished a call & I thought I might be late. I actually pulled into the restaurant two minutes early to meet with a business associate I hadn’t seen in a while.
I had found him on LinkedIn & sent him an invitation. He accepted & invited me to lunch. I thought it would be fun to catch up.
Well, I went flying into the restaurant because I hate to be late & he wasn’t there. I waited a few minutes & called his cell phone. No answer. I sent him an e-mail & a text. Still no response.
There wasn’t anything left to do so...
