Since this happens regularly to me on LinkedIn, I thought it might be insightful.
I was watching TV when an e-mail showed up on my Blackberry through LinkedIn. It said, “David…I’m using your suggestion regarding meeting selective professionals through LinkedIn. I thought I would give it a shot. I appreciate any good words you could pass along to John.”
Bob wanted me to forward his note & make an introduction to one of my connections on LinkedIn. I currently have over 1,200 connections. Some of those connections I know very well, many not as well,...

I recently had a conversation with my business partner, Phyllis Neill. I told her I really wanted to get more feedback or comments on my blog. I had visited Ike Pigott’s blog & he had received more comments on his most recent post than I had gotten in the past two years combined. Pretty depressing for me. Phyllis told me in order to get a greater response, I needed to be more provocative.
Well, my subject matter just doesn’t lead to anything that controversial. This blog is all about doing the little things in life everyday that make you successful. ...

I woke up early because I had a special project with a deadline fast approaching.
When I opened my computer, I saw an e-mail from a friend who wanted me to talk with a fellow who was looking for a sales job. He told me he’s a great salesperson who’s been out of work for some time.
I e-mailed back with my cell phone number & said I would welcome an opportunity to talk, but I was slammed, so our talk would have to wait to the following week.
He then copied me on an e-mail saying I would talk with him, but to please wait until the following week.
Mid morning...

On Thursday I got an e-mail at 10am titled, “Lunch.” In the body of the e-mail, it said “Are we still on for today? The e-mail was inquiring about our 11:30 lunch appointment. I e-mailed back that I would be there & he responded, “Okay, I’m leaving now. This of course means he wouldn’t have come if I hadn’t replied.
On Friday, I got a call on my cell from a woman who identified herself as John Doe’s assistant. She said John had asked her to call to confirm we were still on for lunch.
Now, I’ll be the first to admit I have missed lunch...

I didn’t know this fellow very well. I met him one time at a meeting. So I was somewhat surprised when I got an e-mail asking to meet for coffee.
I assumed he was looking for a job or wanted me to help him with some networking. I get these types of requests all the time & I’m glad to help. So I shot back an e-mail suggesting a time & place. He accepted & I assumed we were set.
Then the day before our meeting I received an e-mail saying he had some people coming from out of town & could we move our meeting back a couple of days.
My first thought...

One of the best sales books I’ve ever read is the Little Red Book of Selling by Jeffrey Gitomer. In his chapter on networking, Jeffrey said the number one place to network is “Chamber of Commerce business events after hours.” And the number two place is, “A high level Chamber of Commerce Event. ” And as it turns out, that is exactly how it has worked for me.
Almost every client both at AmSher, our collections agency, or WeMentor, our social media management business, has originated through our Chamber of Commerce, which by the way is now called...

I completed my speech on social media when a young woman came up, handed me her business card & introduced herself. She said she really enjoyed my speech & hoped we could discuss further. I thanked her for her comments & proceeded to talk to others who had come to shake my hand.
A few days later, I received an invitation to join her network on LinkedIn & then an invitation to be her friend on Facebook. I was not surprised, considering her young age, that she was active on Facebook, but I was startled that we had 19 friends in common. I...

I woke up at 5:30 to get some work done and rushed to my computer. I had checked my e-mails the night before…so I didn’t expect any new ones. But there was a lengthy LinkedIn e-mail from a John Garrett. Who is John Garrett?
I had posted a question on LinkedIn the previous afternoon asking if anyone had ideas about how to build traffic for my podcast. John sent me two pages of suggestions at 1:30 in the morning. What an unselfish act.
I responded with a thank you, and he replied by inviting me to lunch to brainstorm other ideas. I didn’t know...
