YOU’VE LOST CONTROL OF YOUR BRAND

You can no longer control your brand. There once was a time when you could create an image for your business. You could buy advertising with traditional media to tell people how great you are.  You could force your ad on the public & they couldn’t avoid it or respond. Now with traditional forms of media fading, & your customers & potential customers talking with one another on the Internet, you no longer own the conversation. To prove a point, I wrote the following post on my personal Facebook page, “Bought turkey bacon @ Publix.  Sign said 2 for $4.00.  Rang up for $2.79 (regular...

HOW I SCREWED UP ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Recently I sent an e-mail to a friend & business prospect asking for permission for Phyllis & me to visit his office to tell him about our social media outsourcing services. Well, I never expected to get this response. “We were talking a few weeks ago about social media strategy & trying to figure out the best way to utilize social media for our industry.   One of my business associates suggested talking with you about your new company. I’m still not sure what the right strategy/answer is & it’s something your firm could likely help us with, but to be candid, there is an...

SOCIAL MEDIA STUPIDITY

A few weeks ago I did a post, titled, “You Really Don’t Want To Do This on LinkedIn.” I told how I’d I received a request from Bob, who I didn’t know very well, to make a business introduction to one of my LinkedIn connections.  However, I had never done business with Bob, so there was no way I could comfortably recommend his work.  I felt my only option was to forward the request with these comments, “I’ve met Bob on a couple of occasions.  He seems very nice, but I really don’t know him very well.  He asked me to forward this note to you.” I was not surprised when the...

A SOCIAL MEDIA LOVE AFFAIR

I’ll never forget the first time I laid eyes on Phyllis Neill, my business partner.  It was August 5, 2009 at 7:59am at Starbucks in Vestavia.  She was sitting patiently at the table near the front window working on her Blackberry. She sent me a message through Twitter saying she was following me.  Since we were both interested in social media, I followed her back.  Then I went to LinkedIn to learn more.  I saw she was a high level marketing person who held top positions in major research and technology firms and lived in Birmingham.  So I asked her into my LinkedIn network.  She accepted...

YOU CAN RAISE MONEY ON FACEBOOK

When friends ask me what I do for a living, I tell them I’m a social media missionary.  This is probably not surprising, but many of my contemporaries don’t understand social media.  My friends constantly tell me, I don’t care what others had for lunch.”  Or “Why don’t those folks on Facebook get a life?” I do my best to explain the possibilities, but I’m usually not successful.  So it’s great when I get someone’s attention. Richard Friedman is the Executive Director of the Birmingham Jewish Federation.  He’s a great fundraiser, communicator, & community leader,...

WITH SOCIAL MEDIA–YOU’RE BUSINESS CAN’T SUCK

Play this 2 minute podcast Last summer I flew to Orlando to attend a convention.  I arrived in Orlando in the heat of the day, took a fifty minute cab ride to the Marriott World Center that cost almost as much as my Southwest Airline ticket, & was shocked to see a hotel check in line that wrapped around the lobby.  I was not happy.  The World Center is a first class hotel & I felt it was inexcusable to have such a long wait. So I pulled out my Blackberry & tweeted my dissatisfaction.  By the time I got to my room, I received a response from the Marriott apologizing. There was a...

YOU REALLY DON’T WANT TO DO THIS ON LINKEDIN

Play this 2 minute podcast Since this happens regularly to me on LinkedIn, I thought it might be insightful. I was watching TV when an e-mail showed up on my Blackberry through LinkedIn.  It said, “David…I’m using your suggestion regarding meeting selective professionals through LinkedIn.  I thought I would give it a shot.  I appreciate any good words you could pass along to John.” Bob wanted me to forward his note & make an introduction to one of my connections on LinkedIn.  I currently have over 1,200 connections.  Some of those connections I know very well, many not as well,...

SOCIAL MEDIA GIVES US THE POWER

Play this 2 minute podcast I’ve always enjoyed writing letters to the editor.  Sometimes they get printed & sometimes they don’t.  I never get my feelings hurt because I know the publications receive more articles than they can print, but I’m usually disappointed that I spent my time for nothing or I wasn’t able to share my view. Recently I read a piece in the Birmingham Business Journal on social media that I didn’t feel fairly reflected the enormity of social media or the impact it will have on our lives.  This is a subject that is obviously very important to me since social...

ARE YOUR FRIENDS ON FACEBOOK SUPERFICIAL?

Play this 2 minute podcast   I have a female neighbor who’s probably close to eighty years old.  She lives by herself & doesn’t get out very much.  I know that because I often see her at her front door waiting for the mailman.  When the mail arrives she’s often in her bathrobe.  I think about her & other seniors as I get older myself.  We may become less mobile & more isolated; not able to see our children or grandchildren as often & visit less with friends. That being said, I really feel that those of us who have a variety of Facebook friends will feel less secluded. I...

YOU CAN’T COMPETE WITHOUT THIS SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM

Play this 2 minute podcast I’ve taught hundreds of people how to use LinkedIn & I’m amazed how few of them make an effort to take advantage of one the most powerful business tools ever invented.  Now I admit LinkedIn is no fun.  LinkedIn is work.  But who said everything you do in business has to be fun?  If your competitors uses LinkedIn & you don’t, then you’re going to get left behind.  And people are beginning to wake up. LinkedIn has grown to 85 million members; one million new member every nine days; one new member every second. And look at the demographic on LinkedIn:...
