Years ago when my parents & I were going through the process of deciding on college, I remember my father saying, “If you plan on living in Birmingham, you should consider going to a university nearby because that’s where you’ll make your connections.”
I hadn’t thought about that conversation until recently when I was talking with Rodney Barstein, a very successful business person, & a good friend of mine. Rodney’s son Daniel is an excellent student & athlete. Daniel was not only accepted to Dartmouth, but he made the Dartmouth Varsity football...

How many of you woke up this morning & said, “I sure hope someone sends me an e-mail? Getting more e-mails are probably not at the top of your wish list.
The problem is I’m an e-mail magnet. I get the usual e-mails from work, family, & friends, but because I’m involved in social media I get e-mails from Facebook, Twitter, & Linked in…even comments from my blog.
So I relentlessly manage my e-mail flow. When someone sends me an e-mail newsletter that I didn’t choose to receive, I opt out. If there is no opt out option, I reply with a request...

I recently had a conversation with my business partner, Phyllis Neill. I told her I really wanted to get more feedback or comments on my blog. I had visited Ike Pigott’s blog & he had received more comments on his most recent post than I had gotten in the past two years combined. Pretty depressing for me. Phyllis told me in order to get a greater response, I needed to be more provocative.
Well, my subject matter just doesn’t lead to anything that controversial. This blog is all about doing the little things in life everyday that make you successful. ...

I woke up early because I had a special project with a deadline fast approaching.
When I opened my computer, I saw an e-mail from a friend who wanted me to talk with a fellow who was looking for a sales job. He told me he’s a great salesperson who’s been out of work for some time.
I e-mailed back with my cell phone number & said I would welcome an opportunity to talk, but I was slammed, so our talk would have to wait to the following week.
He then copied me on an e-mail saying I would talk with him, but to please wait until the following week.
Mid morning...

On Thursday I got an e-mail at 10am titled, “Lunch.” In the body of the e-mail, it said “Are we still on for today? The e-mail was inquiring about our 11:30 lunch appointment. I e-mailed back that I would be there & he responded, “Okay, I’m leaving now. This of course means he wouldn’t have come if I hadn’t replied.
On Friday, I got a call on my cell from a woman who identified herself as John Doe’s assistant. She said John had asked her to call to confirm we were still on for lunch.
Now, I’ll be the first to admit I have missed lunch...

I didn’t know this fellow very well. I met him one time at a meeting. So I was somewhat surprised when I got an e-mail asking to meet for coffee.
I assumed he was looking for a job or wanted me to help him with some networking. I get these types of requests all the time & I’m glad to help. So I shot back an e-mail suggesting a time & place. He accepted & I assumed we were set.
Then the day before our meeting I received an e-mail saying he had some people coming from out of town & could we move our meeting back a couple of days.
My first thought...

My wife & I went to see the movie, The Social Network, & it is fascinating.
The Social Network is the story of how Mark Zuckerberg builds Facebook into a wildly successful business & becomes a billionaire in his early 20s. Roger Ebert in his movie review says Zuckerberg is tone-deaf in social situations. In order to conceive of Facebook, Zuckerberg needed to know almost nothing about relationships or human nature (& apparently he didn’t).”
Well, the whole basis of this blog is it’s whOO you know & not what you know. And if Zuckerberg had...

I walked into the room, looked around, & there was my two year old grandson playing with a toy steam engine in the corner of the den. He looked up, saw me, a huge smile spread across his face, & he yelled at the top of his lungs…”D is here, Mama, D is here!” Then he leaped to his feet, ran across the room, & hugged my legs. I think he was really glad to see me.
Well, there you have it. Everything you need to know about networking from a two year old.
It seems like many people in life & on the Internet are only focused on themselves. ...

My meeting wasn’t going well. I was making a presentation to a company about creating and executing a social media strategy. In the meeting were two young men. One was the “Internet Manager” and the other was the “Web Master.” They were responsible for social media in addition to the twenty other jobs they had at the firm.
Actually they were doing fairly well, but their efforts were not consistent and were not necessarily producing much in the way of results.
I was in a somewhat awkward position. I felt that my partner, Phyllis Neill, and I could...

I’ve lived in Birmingham all of my adult life and I promised I would never leave because I would give up the biggest competitive advantage I have in life & business. I know a lot of people. And as you’ve heard me say, “It’s whoo you know.” If I were to move some place else, I would have to start all over again…something that seems inconceivable.
Then I received an e-mail through LinkedIn from Warren Smedley a good business friend of mine. He said, “We have a new PhD researcher in the Cancer Center at UAB and when I met her husband, Gene Wahnefried,...
