I recently received an e-mail from Lynn Rathmell who works for Jewish Family Services. One of her duties is to help unemployed people find work. She asked me to meet with a seasoned business executive who lost his high level management position when his business was sold.
Lynn felt if I tutored him on social media & LinkedIn, I could help him find a job.
When I met him, his first comment was, “In the past I haven’t done a very good job of networking. I ran a successful distribution business for many years & didn’t feel networking was important. Now...

Whenever I present to a group, I ask, “If you were to meet a person you didn’t know, how would you check her out?” The response is always the same, “I would Google them.”
It’s said, you only have one chance to make a first impression. The first information anyone sees about you are the first few entries on Google.
This really got my attention when I was training a successful CEO on social media. He said, “I’m kind of a private person & I really don’t want everyone to know my business.” However, when I Googled his name & company,...

Last week I asked the question whether it is a good idea to ban social media sites at work. Companies certainly couldn’t operate without telephones and in the future, companies won’t be able to operate without social media. Employees can waste time on social media just like they can waste time on the phone.
Now I’m going ask the same question, but in a different way. Not whether it’s a good idea to ban social media at work, but whether it’s even possible to ban social media at work.
Much of social media is created by cell phones and not just by computers. ...

Have you ever gone out on a Saturday night to a party to get away from work and all its pressures—only to be followed around by some insensitive jerk whose determined to discuss business whether you want to or not? Does this make you like him? Even more importantly, will this lead you to do business with him?
That is how some people act with social media.
I have a business and Facebook friend who was unemployed for some time. When he finally landed a job, he invited me to join his company Facebook page. I had no interest, so I ignored his request. That didn’t...

The number one question I get asked is, “Does social media work for businesses selling to other businesses?
I have been a business owner for 40 years. I with my brother, Martin, have operated a retail clothing store, a furniture store, a rent-to-own business, an outsourcing company, & a collection agency. The one thing they all have in common is we spent a fortune on sales & marketing…TV, radio, newspaper, trade shows…big budgets.
A few months ago, Phyllis Neill & I started WeMentor Social Media Marketing to help companies develop social media...

I always make a point to thank friends when they do a favor for me. It takes a few extra seconds, but my mother taught me the importance of a heartfelt “thank you” & I feel guilty if I don’t.
So when a friend of mine tweeted a link to one of my podcasts, I sent her a direct message to thank her. Wow, I was surprised to discover she wasn’t following me so the direct message bounced back. For a moment I got my feelings hurt. But then after a moment of reflection, I determined that wasn’t fair to her or to me. Did this mean she didn’t like me? ...

I received the e-mail while I was attending the National Speakers Association meeting in Phoenix & I had to rub my eyes to believe it. I have a very dear friend who is a retired doctor. One day she told me she wanted to go back to work part time, but wasn’t about ready to go out & look for a job. She said, “I’m a highly qualified professional. I’ve never prepared a resume in my life and I’m not going to go out & beg for employment.” I convinced her to set up a profile on LinkedIn and add some connections, but told her she needed to...

I really really like social media. I know that this should come as no surprise, but I can’t quite get over how much Facebook, LinkedIn, & Twitter have enriched my life and broadened my friendships.
Recently I had a close friend take me aside and tell me she thought one of my posts on Facebook was a little too personal. I thought about it and decided to ask my Facebook friends if they agreed.
I posted that I had received a massage at the Birmingham School of Massage. I had lots of responses…more than you would ever imagine and thankfully everyone thought...

I stepped into the shower at the YMCA after my morning swim. There was an older gentleman there, probably in his early eighties, who I had seen at the Y from time to time.
He saw me walk in & said, “There’s this woman I see regularly in the pool. She’s always so sad and wants to talk. She tells me how lonely she is…that she lost her husband and has no one to speak with. She then starts crying. You can’t walk away. You have to talk with her.”
Then he went on to tell me how important people are. He said there’s nothing worse in life than...

I had lunch recently with a life long friend. We hadn’t talked in a good while so it was great catching up.
He asked what I was doing and I told him I was working with a partner, Phyllis Neill, to help companies make money using social media. He didn’t have the foggiest idea what I was talking about. So I set about explaining LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, you know, all the usual suspects.
I told him about writing a profile on LinkedIn, building up your connections, joining groups, answering questions. I explained how he could make & build new...
